there is so much to say about this year. it was a great one talkin music. so many fantastic labels did a remarkable job. countless fresh releases!!! hard to keep oneself up to date ... it s been the year where i could play sound:frame festival and run vie festival with the likes of koreless, knxwledge, pariah, machinedrum, teebs, jeremiah jae and girl unit plus it was the last 365 days that made me see james blake twice, the man whos album made me cry the first time i listened, see him perform live once in a church in austria and in this perfect set up at worldwide festival . the theatre de la mer . that gave me more than one sweet memory. it was the people that i could see again in sete, GILLES!, vince, marsha, eric, rainer, franck and all the worldwide family, it was the place to meet the beautiful london ladies that i always want next to me on the dancefloors, the chance to see flying lotus with dorian concept and richard spaven, hear the set by pearson sound that made us come up with the want for placing a statue of ramadanman in sete ...the year i could play NTS radio in london for my visit with my lady FLO EVA . w/KDJ . caus we got werk .... it was the year that hitney wouston arrived and renegade steele came along with shitkit. the year of parties with Jacques Greene & Joe Shabadu, Disclosure, Kidnap Kid, Anenon and SimOn/Off 2011 that made my show be broadcasted on a wider range now via NessRadio.com out of Marrakech, big UP to Younes! getting the sound vibes to the arabic world and further. it s beeeeeen gooooood. and i m exited for 2012 .

for tonights edition i have a very special set for you by ANENON . who happend to be in vienna for a couple of days, ending his europe tour with a night at market doing an incredible live set ....amzing to hear a saxophone being played and sampled live and Anenon's whole approach on handling soundwaves, not thinking in grids and clips, just treating waves in means of forms that put together advisedly make up a perfect composition with the right proportions .

that was beautiful.

Brian Allen Simon aka ANENON is an LA based producer who also runs a label called NONPROJECTS. Anenon was participant of this years Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid and he will be releasing his first full length on Nonprojects in April 2012.

Voina (Russian: Война = War) is a Russian performance group known for their provocative and politically charged works of performance art. Voina was founded in 2007 by philosophy students at Lomonosov Moscow State University Oleg Vorotnikov and Natalia Sokol,^[1] In late February 2011 the activists Oleg Vorotnikov and Leonid Nikolayev were released on bail after four months in Moscow police custody, in connection with an anti-corruption protest. They face up to seven years of prison.^[2]^[3] In response to the detention, graffiti artist Banksy decided to raise money for the artists.^[3] They have also been denounced by right-wing groups like the People's Synod.^[1]^[4]

In the night of June 14, 2010, Voina painted a giant 65 m long phallus on the Liteyny drawbridge leading to the Bolshoy Dom, headquarters of the Federal Security Service in Saint Petersburg.^[6] On April 2011, the Russian Ministry of Culture awarded Voina's group in the section "Innovation 2011" of the ministry awards for modern visual arts.^[7]

The exhibition was opened last thursday, june 23rd, and will be on show until the end of august 2011.

for this week’s edit, i will serve you a PICTURES MUSIC label special . just some weeks ago the guys running the label, who are the GREEK GODs (regulars to my show have heard their super tune Y’All Ain’t Serious), were in vienna to play at the last final party for the sound:frame festival 2011. Alex and Matt founded the label, they started out with digital releases by Dark Sky (Frames Ep), Seams (Tourist) and Chairman Kato (Wildfire). For their fourth release they have Koreless with MTI / 4D, to promote this release (first vinyl on pictures!!!) they shared Up Down Up Down (click the pictures on top for the link) for free via the internet. That the name of Lewis ... aka Koreless comes along with an amzing soundcollage that he put together for us at the start of sound:frame 2011 livewise at 8 o’clock in the morning in a very inspiring way, is krystal klear . so to say. For their next release they put out Lapalux on tape (yeah right. .. those oldschool things). We can be exited about fresh Pictures releases, next one might drop on minidisc ..

As i was talking to many artists during the festival, i also had a chance to chat with the Greek Gods, part of this interview i will play you tonight, combined with an one hour mix by the Gods that are literally United Kings.. ...nnnnice. They really have a great taste, selecting very soulful dance tunes.

so well i tried something different this week ... i decided to work ableton.

also inspired by the fact that robert henke was just in vienna the other day. robert henke and christopher bauder who were showing their performance ATOM during the sound:frame festival the other night.

Geschichte/Entstehung [Bearbeiten]
Die Ableton AG wurde vom Informatiker und Musiker Gerhard Behles, sowie Bernd Roggendorf, einem Informatiker und Analytiker, gegründet. Beide arbeiteten zusammen bei der Berliner Software-Firma Native Instruments. Die Firma Ableton AG wurde mit dem Ziel gegründet, eine live- und improvisationstaugliche Musiksoftware zu entwickeln. Weiterhin ist Robert Henke an der Entwicklung der Software beteiligt. Er und Gerhard Behles stellten gemeinsam die Gruppe Monolake dar. Nach der Gründung von Ableton konzentrierte sich Gerhard Behles ausschließlich auf Ableton, während Robert Henke weiterhin als Monolake Musik erschafft und bis heute bei Ableton mitarbeitet.
1998 wurde Ableton Hauptpreisträger beim Gründerwettbewerb Multimedia des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und konnte durch die Hilfe des FUTOUR-Förderprogramms die Gründung des Unternehmens finanzieren. Anfang des Jahres 2000 wurde der heutige kaufmännische Vorstand, Jan Bohl in das Team aufgenommen. Im Mai 2001 konnte Ableton Investoren für sich gewinnen. In Verbindung mit dem Innovationsfond des Landes Berlin und der Technologie-Beteiligungsgesellschaft standen Ableton Mittel zur internationalen Vermarktung zur Verfügung.
Vier Jahre später eröffneten sie eine zweite Niederlassung in New York.

The untitled Virgo album is regarded as a seminal house album. Yet, the album is not common knowledge. Nor is much known about its creators Eric Lewis and Merwyn Sanders.

"We were horrible at networking" says Merwyn now. "By the time we started releasing on Trax, the label was past its prime" explains Eric. Besides, there has always been some confusion about Virgo and Virgo Four. There were two different Virgos on Trax, the other one being the Virgo of Adonis, Marshall Jefferson and Vince Lawrence. Merwyn: "That was one of Larry's (Sherman, Trax label boss) ideas. He felt since we were unknown and our stuff was in the same vibe that it would add some name recognition. Our name was M.E. (Merwyn & Eric). We were very against Larry changing it. We had no idea until he started pressing 'em up. We were somewhat furious, but finally went along with it because we were so into doing the music and not so worried about a name."

Eric and Merwyn were both born and raised on the south side of Chicago in musical families. They met at elementary school and started playing covers of funk and pop hits of that time in a four-piece band. Eric played guitar and Merwyn was on drums. The band didn't last long and disbanded around the time they went to high school. It was here where they started to embrace dance music. "Anyone from Chicago knows about the Mendel high school parties. Literally 1000 kids listening to popular Hot Mix Five DJ's, Ron Hardy and others", Eric says.

Getting their debut single released was not an easy task. After being recommended by a friend they went to visit Trax, where they were initially turned down. When they were also turned down by another Chicago label, State Street, it was back to the studio for Eric and Merwyn. They produced more music and after two years went back to Trax. This time Larry did sign them, because: "Larry's dog he had at the time liked us the second time around and that's how we got started over there" Merwyn says.

Merwyn is really down to earth when asked about the nature of the Virgo tracks: "Our tracks are really just song "ideas", somewhat unfinished in a sense. We always had something on our minds that would come out while we were jamming together. That's why most of it seems deep or emotional, because that's how we felt at the time. Whatever was going on in our lives at the time was coming out in those tracks, even as simple as they were." Eric adds: "You also had to see the things we saw. I remember going to a club called the Music BOX on Lower Wacker Drive. It was in the basement of some office building in downtown Chicago. It was small and tight with a fog machine, but the music was amazing! It was extremely driving but at the same time calm and soothing. That dreamy sound was derived from places like that. We wanted our music to have a strong beat, but transporting as well, like "School Hall"."

Their first single, Virgo Four "Do You Know Who You Are", was finally released in 1989. A second single "Ride" quickly followed in the same year, this time oddly enough, under their M.E. alias. A year after the "Summer Of Love", house music was in full swing in the UK, where "Do You Know Who You Are" was picked up and led Sherman to combine both singles and license these out as the Virgo (this time leaving "Four" off) album to Radikal records. Their second single as M.E. was released a year later. "Winter Days & Summer Nights", which featured r&b singer Yvonne Gage ("Garden Of Eve"), stalled pretty quickly after Sherman refused to promo this to a local Chicago radio station. Merwyn: "Larry told us they wanted it on cd to play it, and Larry refused to give them a cd, he said the vinyl pressing should've been good enough. We thought "aw geesh, you gotta' be kidding me!"

Like most artists on Trax, Eric and Merwyn had their fair share of business problems with the label boss, but it wasn't all bad. Merwyn: "On a personal level we actually were really cool with Larry. As far as needing something, it seemed like we just needed to ask. We were often at Larry's house playing Nintendo or something while trying to get him to listen to more music." Eric continues: "Yeah Larry called us his "sons" or the ME guys. He was really cool with us, even though we thought he was out of touch, to put it nicely. It was a good thing to hang out with the owner of the record company. I remember needing college tuition. I would ask "Uncle Larry" for it. He would complain about not being made of money and then give it to me. So despite what people say, Larry was a good guy."

Yet, only one more single followed in 1992, this time under another alias, Ace & The Sandman on Trax sub-label Saber. Merwyn: "That was another one of Larry's ideas, but at least this time he asked us what name we wanted to use. He felt the Virgo stuff had a particular vibe to it and i guess he felt the other stuff we were giving him didn't match that vibe." By this time the Trax label was on its way down, never to fully return to its mid 80s heyday. Why Eric & Merwyn didn't release more records is simply because "Larry didn't release everything. We were giving Larry tracks all the time. He probably has over 20 recorded and just didn't do anything with them and that's not including what we would give him as ideas. And we were also hoping to do more things. House music was just one thing we did. We also had R&B, Pop type tracks and moody electro music too. We have never stopped doing music."

They never stopped doing music, but they also stared doing other things. Merwyn performed around Chicago for a while, playing anything from Ben E. King, Bill Withers and The Beatles to his own singer/songwriter stuff. He also acts on stage in various plays. Eric graduated from college in 1992 and went on to become a maths teacher. Although they don't see each other as much as before, they still work together on making music. Both firmly state that they will never quit. Let's hope that this re-release will be a new beginning for Virgo Four.

XMAS is here! the kids are exited ... the families come together ... everybody is travelling to get home and be with their beloved ones.

i find it kind of funny ... i love mankind and especially on occasions like christmas one can see how sweet humans are ... everybody gets their very own christmas tree ... squeezes it into the car and follows a tradition, we grew up with, without questioning.

we all perform the same rituals, that actually are supposed to make us feel more connected, celebrate the big party of LOVE, and sometimes all the expectations and preparations of this big event stress the involved out so badly that many families experience a big fight on the birthnight of our savior ... i believe he wouldn t be happy about that.

so, all i wanna say is, try to bring a high level of tolerance to the xmas evening, it is not about that time to proof yourself in front of your beloved ones, it is not about blaming your close ones for anything. it is the time to just see your family, see everything you mean to one another, remember the good and abandon the bad.

we are all anything than perfect, with that in mind, i believe we are more easily able to open up our hearts and spread the love! no judging ... that s what mr. jesus tried to tell us. and i find this very wonderful!

i wish you a delighted, calm, warm and cosy XMAS!

xmas time is a busy time. at least it is for me ... and most of my friends.
we need to finish things, sort things out, get ready for the upcoming year.

still i love this time of the year, especially when it snows, like it does in vienna these days, it brings this fresh winterbreeze to my lungs, makes me think of the good times on the mountains - snowboarding.

to me it is also now the time to take care for myself, give myself some rest, calm down, sort things in my mind, get clear about what s going to be priority and what's not, and also time to hang out with friends and family. that's exactly what i did these days, my cousin flo came over to my place and we had a good healthy dinner (mhhhh salad with orange, carrots, and then salmon with ginger and soy sauce with some self made mashed potatos ....DElicious! - yea we love to cook) and were listening to music, good food, good music - the recipe for a fun life!

so tonight on my radioshow i will play you a lot of the stuff flo played to me ... me and my music sources ... i couldn t do without them, in a life that is so full with music, i do depend on my outer importers to serve me some stuff i might would never ever have found on my own ... and you know ... it is what i believe in ... live networks, share your knowledge and never think you got it all ....

so i wish you a wonderful xmas time ... and especially a GREAT, FANTASTIC, ENTHUSIASTIC, WISH-, JOY- and HOPEFULL start into 2011!

&BEYOND is a one-day mixture of party and urban gaming.
Selected stores and restaurants already open their doors during the day to welcome guests with music and art.

The event's flyer serves as a stamp collector. Besides making new acquaintances visitors can pick up this flyer at all attending locations.

Every location gets you one of the eligible stamps. A flyer containing all stamps gives you free entry to the aftershowparty at Café Leopold. If you have less, every stamp gets you one Euro off the entry.

The numerous orientations and individual activities of the attending locations will address several urban cultures all over Vienna.

This focus blending will be the center of interest during the evening. The "Café" will be flooded with fine DJ tunes while the aspect of live music rules the "Salon".

Aside a set of fixed live-acts one of the main goals is to gather a pool of artists and musicians in the crowd. Their different taste, spontaneity and inspiration will too define the evening both on stage and amongst the other guests of the party.
